General Conference Awards

National Distinguished Service Award

Award Purpose

This award is presented to a CWRA member or past member who has provided distinguished service to or in the Canadian water resource community.


Award Criteria

The criteria can change each year and is selected by the branch hosting the conference.

Criteria have included, but are not limited to:

  • recognition of the individual from more than one area;

  • long and distinguished service to CWRA;

  • participation on the national stage;

  • specific initiatives;

  • particular scientific achievements; and

  • outstanding success in a water resource field.


Award Process

  • The award recipient is selected by the branch hosting the conference.

  • The recipient is notified before the conference so they can be prepared to share a few words after the presentation.


Important Dates and Information

  • The recipient will receive two free banquet tickets for themselves and a special guest.

  • A plaque will be presented at the CWRA National Conference banquet.

Student Awards


The CWRA Student and Young Professional (SYP) Award recognizes exemplary contributions to CWRA by a student or young professional.  


Award Purpose


This award is intended to honour the individuals who:

  • contribute to the accomplishments of SYP groups/chapters;

  • contribute to CWRA in general; and

  • recognize the value of SYP contributions to the vitality of CWRA.


Award Criteria

  • Nominees will be selected by the local CWRA branch.


Award nominees must:

  • contribute to the accomplishments of a SYP chapter in their respective province/territory through a significant personal commitment resulting in the advancement of SYP and CWRA.

  • Have gone beyond the ordinary scope of work to contribute time and effort in support of CWRA SYP activities locally and/or nationally.

  • preferably, but not necessarily, contribute significantly to the planning efforts of National and/or Regional CWRA conferences or other events.

  • foster continued success of their SYP program/chapter.

  • promote their SYP program and the CWRA on a continuous basis, raising the overall general awareness of both CWRA and SYP.


Award Process

  • Branch Presidents must submit a written Letter of Support to the Chair of the Branch Conference Committee’s Awards Subcommittee by emailing

  • The CWRA Awards committee will use this form to evaluate and select the recipient.

  • The award recipient will receive a plaque at the National Conference, as well as a complimentary one-year regular CWRA membership.


Important Dates and Information

  • Deadline for Nominations by Branch Presidents: one month prior to CWRA’s National AGM.

  • The recipient will be named at the at the CWRA National Conference which usually takes places in May or June.

Student Scholarship Awards

CWRA Scholarships in Water Resources

The Canadian Water Resources Association annually offers five scholarships awarded to graduate students whose programs of study focus on applied, natural, or social science aspects of water resources.


Support the Scholarship Program

Make a donation to support the CWRA scholarship program. A charitable tax receipt is provided for all donations to the CWRA of $15 or more. A donation can be made using the online form (link is or by contacting CWRA’s Executive Director at

Award Purpose

  • Dillon Consulting Scholarship - $5,000
    This scholarship will be awarded to the highest ranked of the applicants. Funding is provided by Dillon Consulting Limited on an annual basis.

  • Ken Thomson Scholarship - $2,000
    This scholarship will be awarded to the second highest ranked of the applicants. The Ken Thomson Scholarship is awarded from a special fund set up in his honour.

  • CWRA Memorial Scholarship - $1,500
    This scholarship is a tribute to CWRA Members remembered by their colleagues. This scholarship is funded by donations to the Scholarship Fund.

  • General Scholarships (two provided each year) - $1,500 each
    These scholarships are funded from the general funds of the Canadian Water Resources Association.


Award Criteria

  • Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident

  • Full time enrollment in graduate studies for both the Fall and Spring semester at a Canadian university or college

  • Each department at a Canadian university or college can sponsor a maximum of one submission

  • Submission of all required documents in required formats (see link above to the Scholarship Criteria Information and Application Forms)


Award Process

  • Award notices are mailed to all Canadian universities in the Fall.

  • Applications are submitted to the Chairman of the CWRA Scholarship Committee.

  • The Scholarship Committee reviews and selects the award winners.

  • Scholarships are presented at CWRA’s annual National Conference.

  • Monetary values of each award are provided beside their respective awards listed above.

  • All eligible applicants will receive a one-year membership in the Canadian Water Resources Association.



Award Purpose and Criteria

To qualify for the awards, candidates must:


  • Be well recognized in the field.

  • Display a proven recognized contribution.

  • Be experienced (minimum 10 years).

  • Have an updated curriculum vitae.
